Managing IAQ During Construction in Occupied Buildings: New ANSI Standard 008-2008
Session Id: IH09-RT220 Type: Downloadable
Description
Exposure to construction-related contaminants can present significant health risks and concerns in adjacent occupied space. New ANSI Standard 008-2008 provides guidance for managing IAQ during the construction process. This roundtable will provide a summary of the ANSI standard, along with case studies. Background will be presented describing pollutants and health risks associated with construction and options for limiting occupant exposure. A proactive planning process will be described leading to the selection of emission controls, work area isolation, equipment substitution, housekeeping enhancement, and scheduling changes, as needed to minimize dust and odors in occupied areas during renovation or completion of new building construction. Coordination of IAQ management with overall project implementation, including provisions for occupant involvement, will be emphasized. Site monitoring based on indicator observations and verification of controls will be
discussed, along with incident troubleshooting procedures. General criteria for establishing acceptable conditions for occupancy will also be presented.
