NCI Early Detection Research Network: Investment in Biomarker Research
Session Id: CR09-027 Type: Downloadable
Description
NCI launched the Early Detection Research Network (EDRN) (http://edrn.nci.gov/) in
2000 to identify biomarkers, substances found in blood, body fluids or tissue that show the risk or presence of disease before cancer has had the opportunity to progress in the body. EDRN is the only program focused directly on the discovery and validation of biomarkers for noninvasive, early detection of cancer. The Network unites clinical and basic scientists so that discovery is clinically driven, yet balanced with a systematic approach to validation. Recent reductions in cancer mortality are due in part to risk reduction behaviors like smoking cessation and more strongly to early detection of cancer coupled with appropriate therapy; EDRN continues to advance biomarkers for clinical applications. EDRN will be open for re-competition and funding opportunity this year and the investigators will have opportunity to compete for the grant award. A number of Speakers will discuss the application requirements and review process and answer questions.
