Department of Defense Funding Opportunities for Cancer Research
Session Id: CR09-038 Type: Downloadable
Description
Established by the Department of Defense in 1993, the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) has funded cancer research across a wide variety of specific cancer types. Research results from CDMRP-funded projects have contributed to advancing the scientific understanding of cancer biology, developing promising new diagnostic methodologies, and identifying potential new treatment options. An overview of the CDMRP will be presented by its Director, CAPT E. Melissa Kaime, followed by a panel discussion. Comprised of representatives who have contributed to the mission of the CDMRP, the panel will include Program Managers, Grants Managers, leading scientists, and cancer survivors. This interactive forum will provide the audience with information regarding CDMRP funding opportunities, which are available to national and international researchers across a broad spectrum of career levels. The panel will also discuss other CDMRP topics including (1) the importance of program relevance and portfolio balance, and how it is determined and evaluated, (2) the involvement of cancer survivors throughout all phases of the program cycle, (3) the purpose of scoring individual review criteria by the CDMRP, and (4) the development of specific topics and areas of research emphasis for individual programs.
