Address by the Director of the National Cancer Institute

Session Id: CR09-016 Type: Downloadable

Description

Dr. John E. Niederhuber, director of the National Cancer Institute, will lead a discussion about the opportunities to hasten our progress against cancer and to conduct exciting new science, made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Dr. Niederhuber will discuss NCI"s strategies and directions for investing ARRA funds, including efforts to create and preserve jobs, to promote economic recovery, and to spur technological advances in science and health. Cancer research is a model for the study of disease and our nation"s investment in cancer research can be traced to contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of many other major diseases. Dr. Niederhuber will discuss the dollars going to train and support cancer researchers under ARRA and how NCI intends to balance the needs of individual investigators with large-scale endeavors such as drug development and patient characterization. In the years to come, economic stability and steady growth for our country must be predicated in part on investments in education and scientific discovery. How NCI spends the special resources it has been granted - and how scientists across the United States put them to work - will ultimately reflect the excellence of America"s scientific workforce, and Dr. Niederhuber will discuss his vision for the important work on the horizon.
